EU, Sheets “We expect a comparison on the size of the next budget. European priorities are accompanied by additional resources”

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “The challenge of the next European budget will be to modernize Europe without weakening the policies that hold together territories, economics and communities. The next few years will then be decisive years.” This was said by the Minister for European Affairs, the pnrr and cohesion policies Tommaso Foti during his video intervention at the 2026 edition of the Biennial of the Cooperative Economy, in progress in Milan. “What Europe do we want to build after 2026? – asks the minister-. A Europe that is certainly more competitive and more capable of guaranteeing its security, but also a Europe that does not leave behind territories, citizens, farmers, enterprises and above all that it avoids following ideological dogmas.” “We expect a serious European comparison on the overall budget size and the new own resources – Foti added. Italy is available to work to reach an agreement, but the goal cannot simply be to close negotiations quickly”

“I would like to highlight something about the new 2028-2034 multiannual financial framework, which for Italy must maintain the size of 2 thousand billion while we agree that less programmes are needed, greater flexibility more simplification and more integrated management of resources. As Italy – Foti has declared – we share the need to modernize the European budget and make it obviously as simpler and more effective, but we cannot think of financing the new challenges by sacrificing traditional policies that have represented two fundamental pillars of the European Union for decades.” “The principle we support is simple: we cannot do more with less – the minister added. Reducing gaps between territories, building infrastructure, supporting businesses, creating jobs and strengthening the most fragile areas means making the whole single market stronger.

“To protect the CAP means supporting our farmers but also defending European food security, rural areas and EU production capacity. For this reason, Italy argues that new European priorities must be accompanied by additional resources and not funded through cuts in traditional policies,” he said.
