In April stationary retail sales on a monthly basis

OMA (ITALPRESS) – In April 2026 retail sales, compared to the previous month, are stationary in value and decrease in volume (-0.3%). In a slight increase the sales of food in value (+0.2%) while those in volume (-0.2%); in decrease the sales of non-food goods (respectively -0.2% in value and -0.4% in volume). It makes Istat known.

In the quarter of February – April 2026, in conjunctural terms, retail sales see an increase in value (+0.8%) and in volume (+0.2%). Sales of food increase in value (+0.8%) and decrease slightly in volume (-0.1%), while those of non-food goods are increasing both in value (+0.8%) and in volume (+0.4%). In April 2026, retail sales recorded an increase of 1.6% in value and a decrease of 0.3% in volume. Food goods increase in value (+0.6%) and decrease in volume (- 2.2%), while non-food goods are growing both in value and in volume (respectively +2.6% and +1.2%).

With regard to non-food goods, positive tendencies are recorded for all groups of products except for Games, toys, sports and camping (-0.8%). The increase in pharmaceutical products (+5.2%). Compared to April 2025, the value of retail sales is increasing for all distribution forms, more marked for electronic commerce (+8.4%). The latter is the only sector to highlight growth also for volumes. From this communiqué the information offer is expanded with the diffusion of data in volume also for distribution forms and for the detail of the large distribution. Its historical series began from January 2021.

“In April 2026, compared to the previous month, retail sales are stationary; in content increase only food sales in value while for volume and sales of non-food goods there is a decline – is the commentary of the Statistical Institute -. On an annual basis there is a growth in value, which concerns both compartments but is more marked for the non-food sector, while overall volumes are falling due to the negative dynamics of sales of food. Always in tendential terms, retail sales increase for all distribution forms, to a particularly sustained extent for online commerce, the only one growing even in volume”.
