New York celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Republic, console debut for Giuseppe Pastorelli

For his first Festa della Repubblica by Consul General of Italy in New York, Giuseppe Pastorelli welcomed the Italian community of the city on Wednesday evening for one of the most anticipated appointments of the consular calendar. In front of the guests he spoke with visible emotion, giving way to an evening dedicated to the eighty years of the birth of the Republic.

The celebrations held together the historical memory and portrait of a contemporary Italy, able to innovate and together firmly linked to the relationship with the United States. From Italy came the video message of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, who turned to the Italians beyond borders talking about “a community that can look to the future with confidence, courage and talent and that brings to the world the best face of Italy”. “We are proud of the eighty years of our Republic,” added the minister, announcing a calendar of celebrations “that will also involve Italian schools abroad”.

In the hall, alongside representatives of the economic, university and cultural world, also Mr Christian Di Sanzo, Member of the Foreign District for North and Central America, who retraced the meaning of 2 June 1946, when for the first time they also voted women: “The Italians chose the Republic, chose democracy, chose freedom”, a gesture that defined “a profound act of renewal, a promise of dignity and justice for all”.

On the artistic side, the highest moment was the connection with Bologna, from which Paolo Fresu played the Italian and American hymns, alternating and overlapping the two melodies in a tribute to the bond between the two countries. The dance is followed, with the Aterballetto di Reggio Emilia, among the leading realities of the contemporary European scene.

Later the evening changed the register with the dj set of Molella and Cristian Marchi, two historical names of Italian dance. Among the guests of the festival also the actress Whoopi Goldberg, now home to the Italian events of New York, who turned to the present with words of affection: «I come here gladly because I love this community, which has welcomed me throughout Italy, has given me so much affection and has never turned my back: we are really one family».

The festival has confirmed the weight of a community that continues to make a connection between Italy and the United States, on the cultural level and on that of institutional relations.
