ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The pre-visual framework for 2026-2029 reflects an approach to realism and prudence. For 2026, GDP growth is estimated to be 0.6%, slightly lower than previous expectations. In 2027 growth would be kept to 0.6% and then strengthened moderately in 2028-2029”. Thus the Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti, in audition at the joint committees Budget of Chamber and Senate on the Public Finance Document. “In a more complex context, Italy possesses strengths, as recognized by all international bodies and lastly by the OECD,” Giorgetti claimed.
“We must not lose sight of a fact: the government has significantly reduced the deficit without resorting to restrictive manoeuvres thanks to prudent and responsible management of public finance, constant monitoring of expenditure and good results obtained on the revenue front,” he added.
The document arrives in “context marked by high uncertainty regarding which the forecasts are likely to become obsolete, but we have not given up to make forecasts with different scenarios”, is what explained by the minister.
“The government has never indicated objectives of the deficit below 3% to automatically and mechanically prefigure the exit from the procedure,” he said.
“It is a framework that requires realism, we are not faced with dynamics determined by the individual choices of European governments, but with external shocks that affect all advanced economies. For a country like Italy, strongly integrated in international trade and dependent on energy stability, this imposes a clear line: strengthening the estate of the productive system, consolidating the credibility of public finance and maintaining the ability to protect families and enterprises from destabilizing effects from shocks,” he stressed.
“This government is an expression of the majority where there are different ideas with a flourishing of proposals, but the government summarizes. I think the synthesis is what I am doing, and then Parliament is free to do what it wants. A well specified deviation to support situations that have come to create exceptionally. I feel that the hypothetical shock would be to make the election campaign, no the shock if we do it is for the interest of Italians and Italian economy, not for ourselves. It will seem ridiculous for someone to think of the country’s general interest,” said Giorgetti.
