Adding to the Mimit the agreement with JSW for the relaunch of the steel pole of Piombino

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Adding to Mimit the agreement with JSW for the relaunch of the historic steel pole of Piombino. The Programme Agreement, undersigned by JSW Steel Italy, Piombino Logistics, GSI Lucchini, the trade union organizations and the competent public parts, including Ministry, Tuscany Region, Piombino Municipality, Port System Authority, Demanio Agency and the other institutional entities involved, defines the shared framework for the implementation of the industrial plan of the site and for the full occupational safeguard of the workers. “Piombino starts to become the protagonist of the national steel industry. Mimit has worked with a clear line, making itself a spokesman for employee protection and productive continuity: overcoming years of uncertainty, giving the site a concrete industrial perspective and ensuring full employment protection”, said the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso. “The Programme Agreement now opens the stage of the implementation of commitments: this is what will be the responsibility of all the parties involved.”.

The agreement, reads in a note, “reents within the framework of relaunching the steel pole of Piombino promoted by Mimit, along with the Program Agreement with Metinvest Adria and the solution path of the Magona dispute with the entry of Trasteel”. Three industrial dossiers remained for years in uncertainty, even after the 2018 Programme Agreement remained largely untouched on the industrial level, “they were faced by the current Government through a unitary design based on investments, productive continuity, occupational safeguard and valorisation of skills, with the aim of returning to the historic Tuscan site a stable and concrete perspective.” The Programme Agreement signed at Mimit, which will now be submitted to workers by trade union organizations, concerns the safety and environmental remediation of the area and the relaunching and industrial conversion. The JSW plan provides for the modernization of the rail lamination train, with the renovation of existing plants, the installation of new technologies and a research and development project for the introduction of the best technological solutions available. The total investment amounted to EUR 148.2 million and may in part benefit from public facilities of the Mimit.

Following the commitments made by Minister Urso on the occasion of his recent visit to Piombino, during which he had a confrontation with the representatives of the trade union organizations, the understanding previews the maintenance of the entire labor force currently occupied with the Indian group, including the workers of GSI Lucchini and Piombino Logistics. For workers in the area, JSW undertakes to request access to social shock absorbers. In addition, if the Metinvest project is not implemented, in whole or in part, JSW will be required to present a new industrial plan aimed at safeguarding and reabsorption of the workers concerned. In addition, a four-monthly monitoring of the implementation of the commitments made and the progress of the industrial and employment relaunch. After the passage into the respective assemblies of the Commune and the Region, the parties will sign an appropriate addendum to formalize the commitments assumed.
