Ferragosto at the restaurant, spending over a billion: Fipe-Confcommercio data

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – August is the month of the year in which you spend more for breakfasts, aperitifs, lunches and dinners outside the house, with a total expense for food consumption that will reach 10.8 billion euros, of which 1.6 billion generated by foreign tourists. According to estimates of the FIPE-Confcommercio Study Centre, restaurants will absorb 6.2 billion euros, followed by bars with 2.2 billion.

The only day of August 15 will record the peak of demand with over a billion euros spent in public exercises. Between lunches and dinners of Ferragosto, the shopping in restaurants will be at least 500 million euros. Dinner will represent the main opportunity of consumption of the month with 5.5 billion euros, followed by lunch with 2.7 billion. Breakfasts and aperitifs will generate 700 million euros each, while break and after dinner worth 400 million euros per head, notes the Centro Studi FIPE-Confcommercio.

“The forecasts of August are comforting, despite the complex geopolitical context that affects tourist flows” and “confirm how catering is not only a service of support for tourism, but among the main generators of economic, social, identity and cultural values of the country”, explains Lino Enrico Stoppani, President of FIPE-Confcommercio. “Behind these numbers there is the extraordinary commitment of more than a million people who, with professionalism and commitment, continue to keep the territories alive and vivable and to value our food and wine identity”.

The overall picture of summer 2026 (June-September) shows a trend characterized by an increase in expenditure on consumption outside the house compared to 2025, from 38 to 38.2 billion euros. To make possible the full functioning of the reception machine, explains again the Centro Studi FIPE-Confcommercio, is a basin of over 1,375 million employees, of which 51% is composed of women and about 40% from young people under 30 years.

A category that guarantees the estate of the sector even in the days of maximum tourist pressure, facing complex turns in bars, restaurants and bathing establishments. The centrality of the human factor remains the true pillar of Italian catering: a heritage of professionalism, sacrifice and dedication that continues to represent the main attraction for national and international tourism.
