The European Parliament approves the Digital Euro Regulation

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Digital Euro Regulation has now been approved at first reading by the European Parliament, with 416 votes in favour of 607 voters. The measure is part of the so-called “one currency package”. This is a fundamental advance for a strategic project for the future of payments in the eurozone. Bankitalia makes it known. “This will open the Trilogue phase by July, i.e. the negotiations involving Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, necessary to define the final text of the Regulation.” The institutional objective is to “complete the process by 2026”. The digital euro would be an evolution of the single currency in the digital age. It would allow citizens to use, even in electronic format, a form of currency issued directly by the central bank. It would be an additional option in addition to existing private cash and payment tools. The project “ aims to preserve the availability of public money, strengthening Europe’s autonomy and innovative capacity for payments”.

In parallel with the comparison between the European institutions, the Eurosystem proceeds with the work of design and experimentation. In this context, “the Bank of Italy is engaged, together with the ECB and other central banks of the euro area, in the activities of technical preparation of the project”. In the coming months the legislative comparison and experimentation activities “will continue in parallel, with further developments expected both on the institutional front and on the technical one”, concludes Bankitalia.
