New York police seized 3.259 weapons from the beginning of 2026, of which 199 ghost guns, weapons free of serial numbers and therefore much more difficult to track. The data was released on Tuesday by the NYPD, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership, which brings together more than thirty federal, state and local agencies engaged in contrast to armed violence.
Most of the kidnappings took place in Brooklyn, where 915 weapons were recovered, followed by the Bronx with 782, Manhattan with 764, Queens with 605 and Staten Island with 193.
The ghost guns are privately assembled weapons, often using components purchased separately, and do not have the normal serial numbers used by the authorities to rebuild their origin and property passes. In recent years, components made with 3D printers were added. According to ABC7 New York, in 2020, the NYPD had recovered just 10 ghost guns, against 199 seized in the first months of this year.
The figure comes as violence with firearms in the city is decreasing. In the first six months of 2026 New York recorded 322 shootings, 381 affected people and 122 murders: for all three categories are the lowest numbers ever recorded by NYPD in the first half of the year.
The police attribute part of the result to the greater collaboration between the different agencies and the strategy to focus investigations on people and groups considered most involved in armed violence. The number of ghost guns shows that the danger, in the city, is always latent.
Certainly the illegal weapons market is objectively changed: a part of those recovered in New York today can be assembled without going through the normal sales circuits and without leaving the traces that accompany a weapon produced and marketed legally.
