ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Today a partial solar eclipse will be visible throughout Italy. In the late afternoon, just before sunset, the moon will gradually stand in front of the sun by partially obscuring it.
According to the indications of international health organizations (WHO, CDC, Prevent Blindness), a solar eclipse does not entail any direct risk to human health (such as, for example, effects on pregnancy or nutrition), with the only exception of permanent eye damage due to direct observation even short (look to the sun).
Children and children are subject to greater risk.
As the Ministry of Health recalls, before observing the eclipse it is necessary to wear a specific eye protection (the sunglasses are NOT sufficient) and keep it constantly worn.
These are the key points to consider. the primary risk is damage to the sight: looking directly at the sun or a solar eclipse – even briefly – can cause permanent damage to the retina (solar retinopathy), without causing any feeling of immediate pain. The risk has increased in case of repeated observations, even short. Damage may occur within hours or days.
There is a single safe means of protection for direct observation: look towards the sun using special eclipse glasses (Eclipse Glasses) that are certified as complying with ISO 12312-2.
Every other medium must be avoided because it does not always guarantee a safe protection: for example, there are not enough sunglasses (also worn one above the other), radiographic films, home filters, welder glasses, camera eyelets or other.
Children and boys are more at risk, because their eyes are more easily damaged, and because the fascination of the phenomenon can attract them to the observation of the sun. For them, the observation of the eclipse should take place under the continuous supervision of adults, who must ensure that children and children always and continuously wear glasses for eclipses.
People of old age, or with existing view pathologies or having undergone some ophthalmological surgery may be at greater risk.
In any case, if in the hours or days following the observation of the eclipse noticed of vision disorders, even slight, it is important to immediately resort to ophthalmological medical control.
