CATANZARO (ITALPRESS) – A newborn of just 2 kilograms, affected by a very serious complex congenital malformation of the digestive system with interest of the respiratory tree, has been subjected today to a delicate surgical intervention at the “Renato Dulbecco” Hospital of Catanzaro, marking on the field the definitive operational start of the collaboration between the Chirurgia Pediatrica.
The intervention, of very high technical-scientific complexity, was performed by a joint team composed by specialists of the Pediatric Surgery of Dulbecco, led by Dr. Giuseppe Foreign, director of the S.O.C. by Chirurgia Pediatrica with the participation of Professor Girolamo Mattioli, director of the Pediatric Surgery of Gaslini and among the major Italian experts of neonatal and mini-invasive surgery. Fundamental was the contribution of the anesthetic team, coordinated by Dr. Andrea Moscatelli, head of the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Therapy of Gaslini, along with the anestheists of the Company “Dulbecco”, directed by Dr. Faragò, director of the Anesthesia and Reanimation Structure. The presence of Professor Moscatelli is the start of an important training course on the field of the Calabrian anesthetic team, a strategic element for the development of neonatal surgery with high complexity.
The operating activity was supported by a highly specialized nursing team composed by Dr. De Nardo, coordinator of the operating block, by experienced nurses Andrea Ferro, Vincenzo Paone, Emma Carneri. This synergy is not born today, but represents the culmination of a virtuous path developed over the last two years and now reached its institutional formalization, strongly supported by the Strategic Direction of Dulbecco and firstly by the management of the two companies with the head of the Commissioner Dr. Simona Carbone and Dr. Renato Botti. A collaboration that has already demonstrated its value on the territory, collecting the consent of the families and health professionals involved. The intervention required a very close multidisciplinary integration between pediatric surgeons, anesthetists, neonatologists and highly specialized nursing staff, confirming how the treatment of more complex congenital malformations requires dedicated skills and a perfect harmony between all the professionals involved. The small patient had a rare and severe congenital anomaly that involved the digestive tract and respiratory tract at the same time, a condition that, without a timely and highly specialized intervention, could seriously compromise its survival.
The operation was tackled with advanced techniques and an organization that simultaneously involved operating room, neonatal intensive therapy and specialist anesthetic support. Today’s intervention represents the first major visible result of the structured agreement between Dulbecco and Gaslini, a partnership that aims to manage in Calabria a significant part of the neonatal and pediatric cases with high complexity traditionally treated at the Genoese pole, avoiding transfers outside the region and guaranteeing care of excellence close to families. The aim of the project is twofold: on the one hand, guaranteeing Calabrian children the best surgical and anesthetic skills available, on the other, building a stable path of professional growth, through the periodic presence of Gaslini specialists, sharing of the most innovative techniques and direct training of local teams. To welcome the Genoese specialists was the head of the Materno-Infantile Department of the Dulbecco Company, Dr. Giuseppe Raiola, who will coordinate the integration activities between surgical, neonatological, anestheological and clinical paths, favoring an organizational model capable of networking skills, technologies and continuous training. Also present is the director Giovanni Sica, Director of Newborn Pathology.
For the small patient the delicate post-operative phase is now open, entrusted to the integrated care of Chirurgia Pediatrica, Neonathology and Anesthesia, with intensive monitoring that will accompany the recovery path. The day of 11 August 2026 represents a moment of particular significance for Calabrian health: the alliance between the Dulbecco Company and the Gaslini Institute fully enters its operational phase, laying the foundations for a model of collaboration intended to strengthen pediatric assistance with high specialization and to offer children of Calabria ever more advanced care without leaving them from their own land.
