A 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old girl died Saturday night after the boat on which they traveled over near Liberty Island, the island of the Statue of Liberty, in the Bay of New York. The other twelve people who were on board were recovered from the water and brought to several hospitals in the city with minor injuries.
The first 911 call arrived just before 22:30 and reported an overthrown boat in Upper New York Bay. According to the police reconstruction, port units, divers and air crew of the New York Police Department were sent on site. The Fire Department rescuers also participated in the operations.
Twelve people had already been pulled out of the water when the agents arrived, reported NYPD to CBS News. The divers then identified the woman and the child, both in critical condition. They were transported to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where they died shortly after.
Their names were not spread, waiting for family members to be alerted. The police did not clarify whether the woman and the child were related. On Sunday morning the other twelve people involved were in stable conditions.
The New York Post described the boat as a 22-foot long motor bowrider, about 6.7 meters: a type of boat with a second area for passengers made in the front of the hull. The authorities have not yet communicated the model, the authorized capacity, the point from which it had left and whether it was a private or commercial journey.
The cause of tipping is still unknown. The NYPD said that, on the basis of the first checks, there are no other vessels involved. No arrests were made. The U.S. Coast Guard participates in the investigation and let CNN know that investigators will interrogate the captain. They will have to reconstruct the distribution of passengers on board, the conditions of the boat and the maneuvers performed in minutes before the accident.
Another serious overturn occurred in July 2022 just north, on the Hudson River, in front of Pier 84 in Manhattan. They died a 48-year-old woman and a seven-year-old, trapped under the hull. In that case federal investigations ensured that the boat transported thirteen people, was overloaded and was used for paid excursions without the necessary permissions. The captain was sentenced to 18 months in prison in January 2025. For the incident on Saturday, at the moment, there are no elements that allow to attribute the tipping to the same circumstances.
