ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In June 2026, Istat estimates, for trade with non-EU countries, a conjunctural reduction for exports (-4%) and an increase for imports (+1.3%).
The monthly decrease in exports is due to lower energy sales (-17.8%), capital goods (-5.3%), non-durable consumer goods (-4.3%) and intermediate goods (-2.2%); only exports of durable consumer goods (+6.0%). On the export side, the economic increase is explained by the major purchases of non-durable consumer goods (+16.1%), intermediate goods (+5.5%) and durable consumer goods (+1.8%).
In the second quarter of 2026, compared to the previous one, export grew by 0.5%, mainly due to increased energy sales (+72.3%). In the same period, import accounts for an increase of 10.3%, to a large extent determined by higher energy purchases (+50.2%); only imports of non-durable consumer goods decrease (-11.4%).
In June 2026 export grew on an annual basis of 3.6% (was +6.8% in May 2026). The tendential growth of exports to non-EU27 markets is mainly due to higher energy sales (+54.9%) and intermediate goods (+20.7%); annual exports of capital goods (-8.7%) are reduced. The import recorded a much wider trend increase (+18.5%) and generalized, which mainly contributes the increase in energy purchases (+31.9%) and intermediate goods (+23.7%).
In June 2026 the trade surplus with the non-EU27 countries amounted to +2.550 million euros (+5.478 million in the same month of 2025). The energy deficit (-4.979 million) is higher than a year earlier (-3.880 million). The advance in the exchange of non-energy products falls from +9.358 million June 2025 to +7.528 million June 2026.
In June 2026, increases on an annual basis of exports to China (+19.1%), Turkey (+10.8%), Switzerland (+10.5%) and MERCOSUR countries (+4.4%). Modesto the increase of export to the United States (+0.4%). Sales to the United Kingdom (-10.5%), Japan (-4.5%) and ASEAN countries (-2.5%).
Imports from all major non-EU partner countries grow annually. The purchases from the OPEC countries (+47.8%) record the wider trend increase; they follow the purchases from MERCOSUR countries (+30.3%), ASEAN countries (+29.9%), Switzerland (+23.2%) and China (+20.5%).
“In June, both the economic and the trend of exports to non-EU countries is partly influenced by high-impact sales of maritime transport recorded in May 2026 and June 2025 – Istat comments – net of these, it is estimated to be a lower monthly reduction (from -4.0% to -2.4%) and a more sustained trend growth (from +3.6% to +5. On a yearly basis, export growth is mainly driven by higher sales of intermediate goods; the much more intense one of import, by higher purchases of intermediate goods and energy. In the first half of 2026, the tendential growth of export to non-EU countries (+4.3%, +3.9% net of energy) is lower than that of import (+5.5%). The trade surplus with non-EU countries (+24.1 billion euros) is substantially stable compared to the first half of 2025 (+24.5 billion)”.
