ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Last August the debt of public administrations was 3,200,8 billion, down 6,1 compared to the previous month. This is what emerges from the statistical publication “Public Finance: Requirements and Debt” of the Bank of Italy.
The decrease in the liquid availability of the Treasury (16.6 billion to 59.1), only partially offset by the requirements of public administrations (10.4 billion) and the effect of wastes and premiums for issue and refund, the revaluation of securities indexed to inflation and the change in exchange rates (0.1 billion).
With reference to subsector allocation, the decrease in debt is attributable to that observed for central administrations (6.4 billion), partly offset by the slight increase in local government debt (0.2 billion). The debt of the Social Funds has remained unchanged.
The average residual life of the debt decreased slightly to 7.8 years, from 7.9 in the previous month.
The share of the debt held by the Bank of Italy continued to decline, placing itself at 16.4 percent (from 16.6). In July (last month for which this data is available) that held by non-residents had increased to 36,5 percent while that held by other residents (mainly non-financial families and enterprises) to 14,7 percent (from 36,2 and 14,6 percent, respectively).
In August the tax revenue of the state budget amounted to 56.7 billion, an increase of 1.2 percent (0.7 billion) compared to the corresponding month of 2025. In the first eight months of 2026 they were 391.2 billion, up by 2.5 percent (9.4 billion) compared to the same period of the previous year.
