ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In August, on a monthly basis, according to Istat data the number of people employed remains unchanged, the unemployed increase and the inactive decrease. The substantial stability of employment, both for men and for women, is a synthesis of the increase of permanent employees and those who are at least 50 years old and of the fall of term employees, the selfemployed, the 25-34 years old and the 35-49 years old; the number of employed is unchanged between the 15-24 years old. The employment rate drops to 63% (-0.1 points).
The growth of people seeking work (+3.1%, equal to +48 thousand units) involves men, women and all age groups. The unemployment rate rises to 6.2% (+0.2 points) and the youth rate to 20.3% (+0.6 points). The decrease in inactives between 15 and 64 years (-0.2%, equal to -21 thousand units) concerns men and all age groups except 35-49 years, among which is growing; among women, however, inactivity is substantially stable.
The inactivity rate falls to 32.7% (-0.1 points). Compared to the quarter June-August 2026 with the previous one (March-May 2026) an increase of 40 thousand occupied (+0.2%).
Compared to the previous quarter, people in search of work also grow (+8.5%, equal to +123 thousand units), while the inactives of 15-64 years (-1.3%, equal to -164 thousand units).
In August the increase in the number of employees compared to August 2025 (+1.2%, equal to +291 thousand units) affects men, women, 25-34enni and those who are at least 50 years old; between 15-24enni and 35-49enni, instead, the employed decrease. On an annual basis the employment rate increases by 0.6 points. Compared to August 2025, the number of people seeking work grows (+8.8%, equal to +129 thousand units) and decreases that of the inactive between 15 and 64 years (-3.0%, equal to -381 thousand units).
