In 2025, the average household expenditure remains stable at 2.782 euro

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In 2025 the average monthly expenditure for household consumption is equal, in current values, to 2,782 euros and is stable compared to 2024 (2,755 euros). Istat announces it, specifying that the average monthly expenditure of households resident in the Northeast (the highest compared to the other divisions) is 39.3% higher than that of Southern families (the lowest).

The average monthly expenditure for consumption of households composed only by Italians exceeds more than one third (+37.8%) that of families with foreigners. Specifically, in 2025 the estimate of the average monthly expenditure of households resident in Italy is 2.782 euro in current values, substantially unchanged compared to 2.755 euro of 2024 (+1.0%); in 2025 the inflationary dynamic was moderate and equal to +1.6% if calculated through the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (IPCA).

Since the distribution of consumption is asymmetrical and more concentrated in the medium-lower levels, the majority of households spend less than the average value. The average value (the level of consumption expenditure that divides the number of households into two equal parts) is therefore lower than the average and, in 2025, is equal to 2.338 euros (2.240 euros in 2024).

Compared to 2024, household expenses for the purchase of non-alcoholic food and beverages increased, from 533 to 552 euro per month (+3.6%) also due to the increase in prices (+3.0% change on an annual basis of the ICA, had been +2.5% in 2024); the share of total expenditure for this division rose from 19.3% to 19.8%. In detail, costs for coffee (+14.6%), water (+8.3%), fish (+7.8%), oils and fats (+6.7%), tea and infusions (+6.7%), meat (+5.4%), milk, other dairy products and eggs (+4.2%).

Non-food spending is stable compared to the previous year and is on average at 2,230 euro per month; it represents 80.2% of total expenditure and varies between 2.533 euro in the Northeast and 1.652 in the South. The stability of non-food expenditure compared to 2024 is also confirmed at the level of division. The main items on the family budget continue to be those relating to housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (36.0%) and transport (10.6%).

To follow, the expenses for catering and accommodation services (5.9%, as in 2024) and that for Beni and services for the care of the person, social protection services and other goods and services (4.7%). Resident households can change their consumption habits over time and change takes different profiles depending on the item of expenditure considered. In 2025, 29.4% of households declare that they have limited food spending compared to the previous year, reducing the quantity or quality of the purchased products (it was 31.1% in 2024), a third of households limited that for drinks (33.8%, from 35.3% in 2024).

As in the previous three years, even in 2025 the item of expenditure that families claim to have limited more is that for clothing and footwear: if you exclude those who claim not to have supported this expenditure (the 5.8% of all resident families), the share of those who tried to reduce it is 43.8% (decreased compared to 47.5% of 2024) and rises to 52.1% in the Mezzogiorno (where is however in decline). Compared to 2024, the share of households claiming that they have not altered their purchasing behaviour for health-related goods and services (74.6%, was 78.6% in 2024) and personal care and hygiene (61.8%, from 63.3% in 2024).

A similar trend is observed in the buying behaviour of carburetors and travels: the share of families that in 2025 declares that they have not changed habits falls, in the first case, from 71.4% of 2024 to 68.2%, and in the second case from 56.2% to 54.9%. For fuels the decrease in 2025 is particularly marked in the North (from 76.9% to 71.8%), while for travel the decline is observed mainly in the Centre (from 59.5% to 55.6%).
