To the House “do not do things”, the role of journalism in the story of data

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – On Wednesday, September 23rd, in the Sala del Refettorio della Biblioteca della Camera dei Deputati, the event “Fatti non cose – Telling the Economy”, organized by Fondazione Lottomatica in memory of Luca Cifoni. At the heart of the meeting the role of economic journalism in a context characterized by informational overload, polarization and increasing distrust in sources. During the event, the results of a SWG survey on the main economic concerns of Italians and expectations of economic journalism were presented. There was a round table with representatives of Chamber and Senate and Roberto Sommella, director of Milano Finanza, moderated by Simone Canettieri del Corriere della Sera. Roberto Napoletano, the director of Il Messaggero, who retraced his experience in journalism and the role of director, focused on the changes in the way of making economy and producing wealth. “The way of doing economy and producing wealth has changed,” he said. Davide Colombo, from Istat, recalled the figure of Luca Cifoni, focusing on his method of work and the ability to transform the data into an understandable story. “Luca often did a piece and the director of the Sun 24 Hours wanted a whole page, they worked on the team,” he recalled. Colombo also highlighted the importance of evolutionary ability in the analysis of numbers, emphasizing that the account of a country’s economy represents a work of great responsibility. During the round table Paola De Micheli intervened, according to which “with the economy and the story of this do not win the elections but lose”. “I am convinced that the interpretative part of politics is always exaggerated and never oriented to a medium-term vision,” he added. Andrea Trenaglia has instead emphasized the weight that the media can have in reading the data. “The media affects everything, sometimes in negative,” he said, pointing out that “the data has an interpretation, the choice of its correlation can affect the analysis I am doing.” Antonio Misiani also intervened on the relationship between politics, data and information. “To question statistical data is wrong, politics must interpret them,” he said, observing how today “we are submerged in daily data, full of sources.” Roberto Sommella, director of Milano Finanza, has placed the attention above all on the relationship between young people, information and artificial intelligence, underlining the need to continue to inquire through newspapers and authoritative sources. “Finance is bridge between today and tomorrow and the bridge we are,” he said. The final speech was entrusted to Marco Osnato, who reaffirmed the importance of the role of information in the political and economic sphere. The meeting was a moment of discussion on the role of economic journalism and the need to provide citizens with adequate tools to understand data, numbers and transformations of the economy. Asked about how to make economic information easier and more understandable for citizens, Marco Osnato, President VI Commission Finances Chamber of Deputies, explained: “I believe that responsibility is above all political, but also in part mass media. We are fortunate to have a lot of data available, so first of all we have to look for the truly objective ones, the most certified and punctual ones. But above all, it is in the comment that we must work: both journalists and politicians must find, even together, a way of communication that is as objective as possible, even in the natural difference of evaluations. It is not the individual given to do the complexity, but the organic vision of a certain type of society, which maybe starts from an economic data or arrives, andhe must be evaluated as a whole.” Finally, Riccardo Capecchi, President of Fondazione Lottomatica, added: “I think we have created the opportunity to remember a great professional, a great journalist and also to put together a discussion between politics, economics and the media, creating opportunities for a dialogue that goes beyond the simple information, story of data and also put together a will to build a vision of correctness and transparency in the logic of the story of information. And on this the message that comes from the story of Luca Cifoni is exactly consistent with what happened today,” he concluded.
