BRINDISI (ITALPRESS) – Eni Storage Systems, a company of Eni Industrial Evolution and FIB (Seri Industrial Group), today launched the construction site for the construction of the new integrated Italian and European pole for the production of lithium-phosphate batteries (LFP), mainly intended for storage systems (BESS) that support the diffusion of renewable energies and the stability of electrical networks. In particular, these systems accumulate the energy produced by renewable sources in excess of production and release it when necessary, and are therefore fundamental to manage the intermittentness of renewable sources. The European demand for these systems is estimated to rise from 36 GWh in 2025 to about 138 GWh at 2030. In an area of the Versalis industrial plant, once used for the storage of polymers and other industrial activities for a long time, was celebrated today, in the presence of the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso and the local authorities, the laying ceremony of the first stone of the first integrated pole for the production of stationary batteries. The development plan of Eni Storage Systems provides for the realization in Brindisi of the gigafactory for the production of cells and modules of batteries and the assembly plant of battery packs (BESS), this last of capacity increased, to assemble also the modules from the Seri Industrial gigafactory of Teverola (Caserta). In the second phase, at the completion of the project, in Brindisi will also be carried out the production of catodic active matter (LFP) and recycling of the batteries, both dimensioned for the two gigafactory. The project provides a total capacity of 16 GWh/year by 2030 (of which half in Brindisi and half in the plant in Teverola), equal to more than 10% of the European market for stationary accumulations (BESS). “We start today in Brindisi an industrial initiative that represents the entry of Eni into a completely new and high growth potential business – said Giuseppe Ricci, Eni’s Industrial Transformation Manager. A project that aims to support the transition, creating industrial and technological value, in a key sector for the decarbonization path, because it integrates the development of renewable energies with the resilience of the energy system. An investment that will give rise to an innovative local supply chain, able to generate employment and strategic autonomy compared to the extra-EU markets, to reduce emissions without losing competitiveness. Our model of industrial transformation that combines greater environmental sustainability, economic competitiveness and energy security is concrete. And it is completed with the contextual entry of Eni in FAENIX, the company of the Seri Industrial group that will trade the systems of accumulation produced in Teverola and Brindisi” “The phases of deep transformation require courage, vision and ability to recognize when some industrial models are no longer sustainable – said Vittorio Civitillo, AD of Seri Industrial and AD of FAENIX -. And if the answer is an investment in an innovative, competitive and central activity in the global energy transition, we are proud to be part of it. When change is driven by a solid industrial vision, social responsibility and awareness that we need to make system in our country, then we are sure that this initiative will be an extraordinary development opportunity for Brindisi and Italy”. “With the opening of a construction site of this type will be able to be born in Brindisi the most important and significant battery pole in Europe, to demonstrate that when working together – and I thank the unions who have believed it – we can govern the transition, also increasing the employment”, said Minister Urso, according to which “this productive conversion, next tothis so significant development of a Polo of batteries, will be able to make the province of Brindisi a European Polo in the green transition”.
