ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The use of digital channels for banking operations in 2025 is strengthened. This is what emerges from the fifteenth Annual Report of the ABI Lab Digital Banking Observatory, the Consortium for Research and Innovation for the bank promoted by the ABI, which points to the development and potential of the sector.
“In a context characterized by an increasingly rapid transformation and an increasing complexity of the scenario, innovation and security play a central role in the banking world, requiring a shared commitment among all actors of the ecosystem,” said ABI Director-General, Marco Elio Rottigni. “The sector has progressively intensified technology spending, which in 2025 exceeded 6.3 billion euros. Among the main priorities, moreover, are confirmed investments in cybersecurity, which, between 2020 and 2025, were almost 2,5 billion euros, to protect data and operations from increasingly advanced threats,” he added.
Growth is driven by mobile banking, with customers active on apps (applications) increasing by 5.7% in 2025 compared to 2024 (of 141% comparing 2025 with 2018). The mobile channel is confirmed as a reference point in customer activity: app slide operations grow 18.6% compared to 2024 and reach a volume almost 3 times higher than that of internet banking. Particularly significant is the growth of instant transfers, up 130.5% from mobile banking and 154% from Internet banking.
The research emphasizes that the banks operating in Italy continue to expand their digital offer, with 77% that has increased investments on mobile banking: among the main directors of intervention confirm the sale of products and banking services, the improvement of customer experience, the efficiency of processes and the strengthening of security. In addition, 52% of reality provides an increase in investment on processes that enable the interoperability of the different channels.
It consolidates the digital offer to support credit and financial management: the subscription of personal loans entirely online is available in 68% of cases, while that of mortgages in 32%. Personal financial management solutions are widespread in 64% of cases. It also expands the offer for specific segments of customers, with solutions dedicated to young people: 43% of reality offers vertical offers for children under 18 years and for the age of 18-35 years. Strong attention to customers sensitive to environmental and social issues (29%).
On the technological front, the adoption of Artificial Intelligence solutions to support the digital acquisition of customers, including automatic identification of identity documents (62%) and video-selfie with real-time biometric verification (48%). In this context of increasing digitization and innovation of banking services, some of the main trends emerging from the Report will be resumed in WeSec – The Salone della sicurezza, the new appointment promoted by ABI and organized by ABIUtilities, scheduled on 22 and 23 September 2026 at the Allianz MiCo in Milan, a hub of comparison between banking, institutions, enterprises, world of technology, consulting, academy and citizens on the essential infrastructures, redefining the protection of the banking sector.
