ROMA (ITALPRESS) – ASSOBIBE, the association of Confindustria that represents the producers of soft drinks in Italy, welcomes with concern the postponement of 6 months of the Sugar tax provided by the draft of the Law of Budget 2027, emphasizing that the umpteenth extension does not dissolve at all the uncertainty that for years brake the Sector, sending every decision to an even more delicate phase.
“The postponement of only 6 months of the entry into force of the Sugar tax leaves over our heads a sword of Damocle that is blocking more than 1 billion investments of the companies – said Giangiacomo Pierini, President of ASSOBIBE – It has failed the courage of a definitive choice against an ineffective measure for public health and devastating effects for the entire supply chain.”.
“We risk finding ourselves – continues Pierini – in the middle of next year with the same tax on the table, with companies unable to plan investments and activities on a horizon of 12 months and an institutional framework made even more precarious by the hypothesis of early elections. The entry into force of the tax would cause a tax increase of 28% per liter, a contraction of sales of 16% and over 5,000 workers at risk. An account that, in the end, would fall on families, because the tax increase would move on prices, at a time when the shopping cart is already under pressure. It is a scenario that we frankly cannot even imagine for the consequences on the supply chain, workers and consumers. We hope that at the approval stage we will reconsider the impact that will have on industry workers and citizens a new tax. That is why we ask the government to have courage and return to their steps, opting for the definitive cancellation of the Sugar tax, so as to solve the problem instead of continuing to postpone it.”.
