Istat, in August the extra EU export grew by 16.1% on an annual basis

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In August 2026 Istat estimates, for trade with non-EU countries, a conjunctural reduction for exports (-2.1%) while imports are almost stationary (-0.1%). The decrease on a monthly basis of export is due to lower sales of capital goods (-7.0%) and durable consumer goods (-8.6%) and non-durable (-6.2%); increase energy exports (+37.5%) and intermediate goods (+4.8%).

On the export side, the economic dynamic is a synthesis of a wide contraction of purchases of non-durable consumer goods (-20.8%) and increases of different intensity for all other groups. In the quarter of June-August 2026, compared to the previous one, export fell by 0.2%; to contribute are the lower sales of non-durable consumer goods (- 2.1%), capital goods (- 1.0%) and intermediate goods (-0.4%), while energy exports (+17.8%) and durable consumer goods (+4.6%). In the same period, import increases by 1.5%, due to the increased purchases of instrumental goods, intermediate goods (for both +4.0%) and energy (+1.1%).

In August 2026 export grew on an annual basis of 16.1% (was +6.6% in July 2026). The tendential growth of export to the extra markets Ue27 is due to the increased sales of energy (+70.4%), intermediate goods (+22.1%), instrumental goods (+12.4%) and non-durable consumer goods (+10.3%); on an annual basis only the export of durable consumer goods (- 2.6%).

The import recorded an increase of 17.2%, which concerns all groupings, except for non-durable consumer goods (-24.6%), and is more marked by energy (+41.4%). In August 2026 the commercial surplus with the extra countries Ue27 is pairs to +2.000 million euros (+1.878 million in the same month of 2025). The energy deficit (-4.808 million) is higher than a year earlier (-3.571 million). The advance in the interchange of non-energy products rises from +5,449 million August 2025 to +6,809 million August 2026. Except towards the United Kingdom (-2.1%), exports to all major non-EU partner countries increase on an annual basis; those to Switzerland (+57.0%), China (+32.3%) and the United States (+31.1%) mark the biggest increases.

Imports from India (+116.5%) recorded strong tendential growth; strong annual increases are also noted for purchases from OPEC countries (+54.6%), MERCOSUR countries (+39.2%) and China (+16.0%). It decreases import from United Kingdom (-13.1%), United States (-11.1%), Turkey (-9.0%) and ASEAN countries (-5.7%).

“In August, the economic dynamics of exports to non-EU countries is influenced by the sales of marine means detected the previous month – comments Istat –; net of these, it is estimated a slight increase in congestion, equal to +0.2%. On a yearly basis, export growth is mainly driven by higher sales of intermediate goods and instrumental goods and is geographically concentrated (especially towards Switzerland and the United States); that of import is for more than half explained by major energy purchases. In the first eight months of 2026, the tendential growth of exports to non-EU countries (+5.8%, +5.2% net of energy) is lower than that of import (+6.4%). The trade surplus with non-EU countries (+33.2 billion euros) is slightly increased compared to the first eight months of 2025 (+32.4 billion)”.
