In the afternoon of yesterday September 22, on the margin of his mission in New York, the Vice-President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani met with a representative of the Italian resident community, together with the Minister of Education and Merit Giuseppe Valditara and some members of the Italian parliamentary delegation visiting for the high-level week of the General Assembly.
The Italian community in the constituency of the General Consulate of New York, which includes the states of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, has over 110 thousand Italian residents. According to the last official census of the United States, in these three states the Italian origin is that majority among the communities of foreign origin, for a total of about 2 million Americans of Italian origin. The U.S. altogether hosts the sixth community in the world for inscriptions to the AIRE, the Italians’ registry in the Far East, the third outside of Europe after Argentina and Brazil.
In his speech, Valditara cited Christopher Columbus as an example of the deep link between Italy and the United States: “The first American in history, an Italian, a Genoese”. The Minister has therefore announced a protocol between the NIAF, the National Italian American Foundation, and the Ministry of Education, which will be signed in Rome on October 12, with the objective, explained, to “to bring in Italy the history, the knowledge of that great, extraordinary experience that was the Italian emigration in the United States”, an experience that, added, “to cement, united our peoples, our nations”.
During the meeting, Tajani thanked the Ambassador of Italy in the United States Marco Peronaci, who arrived specifically from Washington, for the guide towards the Italian diplomatic network in the United States, giving him the word. Peronaci thanked Tajani for his work in these years, describing him as “a politician with a vast financial experience, a minister who knows how to combine ideas with implementation”.
Tajani held a separate meeting with representatives of the Italian consular network in the United States, which includes ten first-class consular offices, eight General Consulates in Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco, a Consulate in Detroit and a Consular Chancellery in Washington, as well as 42 second-class consular offices, of which 27 operate and 25 have more release practices. Since the beginning of 2026, the consular network has recorded 151 consular assistance.
