CERNOBBIO (COMO) (ITALPRESS) – “The historical fringente that we live appears complex and characterized by a transition phase that, while declaring no more current the existing balance, does not seem committed to building a new one, limiting itself to question the values on which national societies have built their present”. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, writes this in the message sent to the Forum Teha di Cernobbio that takes the start today at Villa d’Este on Lake Como.
“To look at an international order respectful of the dignity of people and peoples calls for a rapid examination of the necessary conditions for reform of adaptation to contemporary reality, radically different from the conditions of the second post-war years, in order to make it more appropriate and effective – the head of the State continues – an evolutionary and reforming need which, if it concerns the global community, in many respects concerns the process of European integration. The European Union is still the most exemplary manifestation in the world of sharing of sovereignty, supported by common values, able to assure peace, rights, prosperity spread to a group of States, willing for centuries to fight each other – he adds. His successes are indisputable – and for this reason, sometimes envyed and obsteated – as well as his attractiveness, still intense and vital”.
“His vocation to project outside partnerships based on mutual benefit, starting from the economic and commercial one, with different interlocutors, crosses an expanded season and is well witnessed by the number of Free Trade Agreements recently signed with States and associations of States of each continent – Mattarella points out. Of this model of international cooperative relations, alternative to the logic of the strongest or the profit of robbery as the only parameter, we must go proud: as in all strategic areas where the Union intervenes, it is in fact the person to be put in the center”.
“This basic choice has made the EU able to build an ambitious and advanced continental project, attentive to the size of social inclusion, environmental protection, combined with economic growth. The European Union, far from thinking of renouncing its values, seems more than ever an impeccable necessity to affirm standards of livability for the peoples of the entire planet. Its contribution to a fair and shared international order is valuable and, on this ground, Europe must be able to play by taking initiatives rather than attesting on forms of mere defence,” concludes Mattarella.
