In July retail sales declined by 0.4%, +0.8% per year

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In July 2026, compared to the previous month, retail sales decline both in value (-0.4%) and in volume (-0.5%). Both sales of food (-0.4% in value and -0.5% in volume) and non-food goods (respectively –0.4% and -0.7%). It makes Istat known.

In the quarter of May-July 2026, in conjunctural terms, retail sales see an increase in value (+0.2%) and a decrease in volume (-0.1%). Sales of foodstuffs decrease in value (- 0.1%) and in volume (-0.3%), while those of non-food goods are increasing (+0.4% in value and +0.1% in volume).

On a curtain basis, in July 2026, retail sales recorded an increase of 0.8% in value and a decrease of 0.6% in volume. Food goods increase in value (+0.3%) and decrease in volume (-1.0%) as well as those of non-food goods (respectively +1.1% and -0.2%).

With regard to non-food goods, heterogeneous tendencies are recorded between product groups. The biggest increase concerns Electrical appliances, radio, TV and recorders (+6.1%) and Other products (+5.0%), while Footwear, leather and travel items record the biggest decline (-2.8%). Compared to July 2025, retail sales are increasing for large distribution (+1.6% in value and +0.6% in volume) and online trade (respectively +2.4% and +1.6%).

“In July 2026 retail sales recorded the second consecutive monthly decrease, both in value and in volume – is the commentary of the Statistical Institute. On a tendential basis, there is a slowdown in value growth both for the food sector and for the non-food sector, while volumes are decreasing. In terms of trend, retail sales are increasing in July, both in value and in volume, exclusively for large distribution and electronic commerce.”.
