ROMA (ITALPRESS) – From the beginning of the surveillance to 26 August 432 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection were reported in Italy (312 in the previous report), of which 223 were manifested in the neuro-invasive form (of which 3 imported cases: 1 Maldives, 1 France and 1 Belgium), 63 asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors, 144 This is the fifth surveillance bulletin coordinated by Iss. 17 deaths were notified between confirmed cases (one in an imported case). Literature, calculated on neuro-invasive forms, is now reported and confirmed, is 7.2% (in the same period of 2025, 13.9%).
Last year in the same period were 430 cases reported with 27 deaths. Lethalness, calculated on neuro-invasive forms so far reported and confirmed, is 7.7% (13.9% in 2025). Except to 66 the Provinces with demonstrated circulation of the WNV belonging to 17 Regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, P.A. di Trento, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia. In the same period 10 cases of Usutu virus were reported (6 Lombardy, 1 Emilia-Romagna, 1 Marche, 1 Lazio, 1 Piemonte).
