PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – “Every complaint has the right to be examined and it will be the judiciary to ascertain whether there have been any responsibility in the assistance provided to the child. But we can’t ignore the central figure of this tragedy: diphtheria is a pre-venable disease with vaccination.” Thus the president of the Order of Doctors of Palermo Toti Amato, member of the national management (Fnomceo), after the complaint submitted by the parents of the 4-year-old, died of diphtheria in Palermo, against the three hospital structures that had it in treatment. “Prevention cannot become a secondary element when reconstructing such a dramatic clinical affair – Amato points out. The risk is to feed a defensive medicine that compels health care to continually defend its work in judicial classrooms, while at the same time it grows the refusal of vaccinations capable of preventing serious and potentially fatal diseases. Doctors must of course respond to their own choices, but the assessment of responsibilities cannot ignore all the factors that have competed on the path of the disease.”.
The Higher Institute of Health (Iss) confirmed the presence of the Corynebacterium diphtheriae and the gene of toxin responsible for respiratory diphtheria. “It is from this fact that we must start again – explains the president of doctors -. The priority is now to recover confidence in vaccinations and counter disinformation. Vaccinating a child means concretely reducing the risk that preventable diseases can cause serious forms, complications and irreversible consequences. When there is an effective tool to protect the health and life of children, renouncing is not a choice without consequences.”.
