This week we are five hours behind Italy (and you are not)

If you have friends, relatives or colleagues in Italy, this week there is a small detail to remember before calling them: from Sunday, October 25, the time difference between New York and Italy fell from six to five hours. When in Manhattan it’s 9:00 a.m., in Rome it’s 14:00 instead of 15:00. And no, it’s not New York that changed hours.

On the night between Saturday and Sunday, in Italy the solar hour is back: at 3 lancettes were moved back an hour, at 2. In the United States, however, the change will take place only Sunday 1 November, when even New Yorkers can sleep an extra hour.

The reason is that Europe and the United States are following different calendars for the passage from legal to solar time. In Europe the change takes place on the last Sunday of October, in the United States on the first Sunday of November. The same misalignment occurs in spring, but inverted parts: Americans move their hands first.

The five-hour difference will last until the next weekend. From Sunday 1 November the usual six hours will return between New York and Italy.

Smartphones have already adjusted automatically. For those who keep up with it, it’s worth remembering. Especially before calling someone in Italy, he thinks it’s still an hour later.
