Roggero, a political case that makes the rule of law tremble: the jeweler gunner is dividing Italy but it is only the last escamotage to cash out consensus and votes. But be careful: if Mattarella’s grace arrives, a precedent will be opened to say little dangerous. In these hours there are those who are selling the 72-year-old in prison in Bollate as a decent person, victim of a system that punishes justice “do it yourself”. Too bad his psychological profile didn’t say much from a violent mind and would give way to the many Mario Roggero in circulation.
After more than five years and a memory that as always goes into the most trained people to fake social news than in search of reality, the jeweler of Grinzane Cavour in the province of Turin, spends his first night in the Bollate prison. The prosecution? Retrace and kill thieves who entered his store on April 28, 2021. Thanks to the cameras and to the precise reconstruction of the facts, the judgment and motivations of the Court of Assise could not be more precise: “In his case, we cannot speak of legitimate defence.” The robbers armed with knives and toy guns were already out of the shop ready to enter the car to escape away, when the jeweler without fears did not hesitate to chase them to revenge the stolen loot. With five gunshots he shot cold blood while the robbers were behind his shoulders killing two and leaving the third bleeding to the ground. He will now have to take 14 years and 9 months of recruitment.
In a scene from far west where the jeweler was looking forward to putting his thirst for revenge and using his revolver, we must rewind the tape and go back to really understand who Mario Ruggero is. Yes, because if the saints go to heaven, the life of a common mortal can be marked by moments of perdition. And for Mario Ruggero the robbery of April 28, 2021 was not the only episode of perdition. His gun, in fact, was regularly held, but it was a pity that the arms port had been revoked for a fact that had previously reported it to law enforcement as an extremely dangerous person and not suitable for holding weapons.
It was the evening of 17 December 2005 when the quarrel between his daughter and his fiancé slapped by the latter, sent the jeweler on all the furies. Mario Roggero didn’t think twice. Also on that occasion instead of calling the law enforcement and denouncing the incident, he went to the daughter’s fiancé’s house, brought him down on the street and punched him in the face. Upon the arrival of the boy’s parents, the souls warmed up further and the jeweler who apparently had the habit of going around not with the Sanctians in his pocket but with the gun and the bullet in the barrel, did not think twice about extracting the weapon and pointing it to man height against the whole family. On that occasion we missed very little to turn the scene of a violent quarrel between two boyfriends, into murder. Mario Roggero suffered two months in prison, then converted into a fine of 2,280 euros.
On both occasions, Mario Roggero did not call law enforcement as any citizen would do in a rule of law. Convinced he could solve the situation in his own way, he chose to apply the law of the strongest, obviously favored by the fact that he had a weapon in his hand.
And this is where a reflection is opened on a story that is deeply dividing Italy: the psychological profile of the jeweler of Grinzane Cavour would seem to fall into the sphere of a personality prone to violence and overwhelm, not so far from that of those who deliberately choose to break the rules. His thirst for revenge recalls the same mental mechanisms as those who believe it legitimate to resort to violence to satisfy a personal interest, ignoring the consequences of their actions and showing a substantial absence of remorse. To point a weapon against a person on the run and to shoot not one, not two, but five targeted shots is not a gesture that arises from the instinct of a moment: it requires a determination and a capacity to act that presupposes a strong predisposition to aggression, anger and violence.
But there is an even more important aspect to reflect on. Granting today the grace to Mario Roggero would mean creating a dangerous precedent, a signal that could be interpreted as a legitimization of private justice. No matter who the target is: a robber, a violent partner, a car driver involved in a street fight or even a health worker attacked during his work. Those who decide to take justice alone by replacing the state must respond to their actions before the law. If this principle fails, the risk would be to normalize revenge as a means of resolving personal conflicts.
Imagine landing a day in a Mario Roggero at the wheel. A daring overtaking, an unrespected priority, a degenerated discussion for a trivial reason. If logic becomes the one for which those who feel offended can directly punish those who believe responsible, then it would not be difficult to imagine a disproportionate reaction. That Mario Roggero will help you and will propel the gun from the lowered window threatening to shoot you.
That is why we must defend the rule of law today. If the law of cutter passes and the legitimization of revenge, the modern state was born at the time when the citizens are deprived of the power to punish, would end. In its place would return the logic of strength, fear, retaliation with all that would entail; so let us not forget that, when we accept that each person can do justice by himself, no one will ever be able to guarantee that your rights are protected in the event that you cannot enforce them on your own. Then try to resort to justice.
