ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In August, according to Terna data, electricity demand in Italy has reached the highest value ever recorded for this month, attesting to 28,9 TWh, up 16.5% compared to August 2025. To support growth, exceptionally high temperatures have contributed in particular, which have remained constantly higher than in the same period last year. In the night hours, the average temperatures were 5°C higher than in August 2025, resulting in increased use of cooling systems. In August, production from renewable sources was 12 TWh, covering 41.4% of national electricity requirements. In particular, photovoltaic reached 6.2 TWh (+20.4% compared to August 2025), also supported by the increase in installed capacity. From January to August, compared to the same period of the previous year, the demand is growing 10.4 TWh (+5%) and production from renewable sources of 1.2%.
With an installed capacity of 88.1 GW, renewables covered 42.4% of national demand thanks to the contribution of photovoltaic (+19.6%). As regards industrial consumption, an increase of 1.1% was recorded in August compared to the same month of 2025. In January-August 2026 growth was 3.7% compared to the same period last year. The high temperatures in August affect electricity demand, rising for the fourth consecutive month On the demand figure of August, it recorded both a working day more than last year (21 vs 20) and climate conditions. The average monthly temperature was 2.6°C higher than in August 2025 and 3°C compared to the average of the decade. The minimum temperatures, exceptionally high at night, also resulted in a more prolonged use of cooling systems, further contributing to the increase in electricity demand.
The national production met 85.7% of the demand; the remaining 14.3% was covered by the balance of trade with foreign countries. Net national production stood at 25.2 TWh, 4 TWh more than August 2025 (+14.6%). In view of the high demand, energy imports from abroad increased (+25.2%) and thermoelectric production, which contributed to the coverage of the high peaks of demand recorded over the period. According to Terna’s findings, in August the renewable installed capacity increased by 417 MW, for a total of 4.6 GW from the beginning of the year. At the end of the month the renewable power installed in Italy reached 88,1 GW, of which 47,7 GW of solar and 14 GW of wind. Overall, the generation from renewable sources was stable compared to August 2025 (+0.4%). On the one hand, the increase in photovoltaic production (+20.4%) and, on the other, the contraction of wind production (-24.2%), hydroelectric (-16%), geothermal (-3.4%) and bioenergy (-3.5%). With regard to electrochemical accumulations, a total capacity of 19,54GWh and a nominal power of 8,1GW is recorded in Italy.
