PAYSANDU (URUGUAY) (ITALPRESS) – “How important it is to be bridge builders. This is the vocation to which we are all called: to build bridges, to strengthen ties, to unite, to communicate, to convey the joy of faith, as Blessed Jacinto ‘at the opportune and not opportune moment’ did. Pope Leo XIV said this in Paysandù, Uruguay, in the homily of the votive Mass in honor of Blessed Jacinto Vera, the bishop of Montevideo, the so-called “vescovo gaucho” that “has traveled three times the Uruguayan territory, bringing faith and hope to its inhabitants”.
“Of course it is necessary that the Bridge have good foundations, so that it does not support the most impetuous currents. Of course, as the house built on the rock remains firm in the middle of the storm and the house built on the sand risks to collapse, even a bridge needs the adequate supports not to collapse under the force of the wind and the waters”, the Pontiff continued.
“We think of a symbol that is present in every home of this country, in every place of study and work, in every encounter between friends. I refer to the mate, that drink so typical of South America, whose deep meaning you can explain better than me. Surely the mathematician also accompanied you today, on the journey to this celebration, and will accompany you on the return. The mathematician came to Rome too! The mathematician is a sign of familiarity, friendship and encounter. He teaches us to share and stay together, to strengthen the bonds that unite us and make us brothers – the Pontiff continued -. It is a sign of welcome, integration and common values. “Being the mathematician” is a ritual full of symbols, in which one dialogues without words and every detail has its own meaning. I also think of the mates who take themselves when they are alone and who accompany a moment of silence and prayer. In those spaces of loneliness, how many times will have confided to God your worries and needs, your desires and your deepest dreams.”.
