Nine tonnes of apples will be distributed in Midtown

On November 25, at a point of sale of 261 Fifth Avenue, The Farmlink Project and 260 Sample Sale will set up a distribution point with thousands of apples from New York state farms. The event, a temporary pop-up, will serve to focus on the topic of food waste in the United States and will consist mainly of distribution activities to families with economic difficulties.

The initiative provides for the free distribution of about 9 tonnes of apples, a sufficient amount to cover the needs of about four thousand households. The project is part of Farmlink’s activities, an organization born during the pandemic to transfer agricultural surpluses from producers to food counters, avoiding that still edible food is disposed of or left to disperse. Her director, Eliza Blank, explained that “Every day fresh and nutritious products must be wasted while many families are struggling to obtain the necessary”.

In the United States, according to the data of the Department of Agriculture, a significant part of the crops does not reach the market for logistic or commercial reasons. Organizations like Farmlink operate on the handling of these stocks, an area that in recent years has attracted the attention of public and private entities engaged in the reduction of waste.

Hot drinks and information materials will also be distributed during the event on how the organization transfers surpluses to food collection centres. The stated goal is to increase donations to support the goal of the ten million pounds of food delivered by Thanksgiving, a threshold Farmlink believes to be reached thanks to the increase in public participation.

In addition to the distribution planned in the pop-up, the organization announced the delivery of additional 7 tonnes of apples to various assistance facilities in the districts of Harlem, Brooklyn and Bronx. The collection centers and food banks have become one of the main means of supporting low-income households in large U.S. cities, especially in periods of increased food prices.

Carhartt will also be present outside the exhibition space, which will sell articles made in collaboration with Farmlink. The proceeds will be destined to finance the logistic activities of the organization, which include the transport and redistribution of agricultural surpluses in the various states. The event will begin at 11 am and will continue until the exhaustion of stocks.
