Meloni writes to the President of the European Council Costa: “The EU speaks with a single voice on Ukraine, unacceptable to go in a scattered order”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In light of the latest developments, I am forced to return to a theme that I have repeatedly raised in the European Council. I am referring to the need for Europe to speak with one voice on the Ukrainian question. Need now unpredictable.” Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a letter to the President of the Council Antonio Costa. “Convince me, in this regard, to retrace only what happened in the last month – explains Meloni -. In Miami, a “informal” meeting between the National Security Councils of some European states, Ukraine, and NATO and EU representatives was confirmed only later by US sources. Then we gathered in Oslo. A few days later, in Helsinki, during the session of the Nordic Council, President Stubb and Prime Minister Store suspended the work for a “national” phone call with Russian President Putin. Immediately afterwards, a meeting of the Coalition of the Lonely Ones was convened in Berlin on 19 November, bringing together 37 States. But, a week before, that is, on November 12 – at the margin of the meeting of the European Political Community – we were called to a meeting of the so-called “Berlin Form”, which has a composition still different from all the others I mentioned. As if it was not enough, I learn that in these days there are technical meetings in Brussels, and that there is no better European presence in the talks scheduled for Abu Dhabi between Ukrainians and Russians with American mediation”.

“In the meantime, we will be seen at the informal European Council in Dublin. I have put in line the examples only of the last month because I think they explain more than any word how all this is making us unbelievable in the management of one of the most complicated dossiers with which our Nations are confronted – emphasizes the President of the Council -. And I am convinced that we all realize how, giving the image of a Europe that goes in a scattered order, we do nothing but the interest of those who want this war to continue. And I think it is unacceptable, expected that there are human lives at stake and the future of our security. I put these words black on white, Antonio, because I want it to remain in the acts that do not soon me to this dynamic, nor do I intend to stay to look while you consume. At the same time, I want to clear the field from any misunderstanding: I am not asking for a place for Italy in this or in that format. All else: if it can make my request more credible, I am ready to say that I do not ask for this role either for me or for Italy”.

“When we could, we never made our contribution lacking, and we won’t do it tomorrow. But we are not willing to accept that they negotiate, in the absence of a mandate, commitments that also our nation will be called to assume. Moreover, the result is much more at the heart of the format, and so that Europe may want to determine it must speak with one voice, and authoritative – Meloni writes again in the letter to Costa. What I keep asking is that you decide once and for all who sits at the negotiating table representing the European Union, and with which mandate. In order to proceed in a scattered order, with initiatives that are being recurred and are being validated, it will not help us, neither with our partners, nor with whom we have to convince ourselves to
stop an unconscious aggression. Therefore, Antonio, I formally ask that in the next informal European Council in Dublin the matter will be discussed, so that the European Council in December is able to formalize a decision on the point, even after an agreement with the United Kingdom, Norway and the other European partners concerned. If not, I fear that we risk condemning Europe to irrelevantness in the negotiating process. I trust that you will put the matter between your priorities and you know that you can always count on my support.”.
