Meloni and Mattarella meet Zelensky: “Always beside Ukraine, there is also Europe’s security at stake” / Video

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In these four years the position of Europe and Italy has always remained the same, alongside Kiev, its people and its institutions.” Thus the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, during the joint declarations at the end of the bilateral at Palazzo Chigi with the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky. “To support Ukraine is not only a moral duty but also a strategic need because it is not only the dignity, freedom and independence of Kiev but also the security of Europe in a clearly broader sense of the term,” he added.

“We must always remember that if today there are conditions to work for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine we owe it above all to the tenacious resistance of the Ukrainian people and also to the convinced support that the West has secured in these years, two factors that have prevented Russia from carrying out the plan that had been set up and that is to invade the whole nation, to make it capitulate in a few days, to install a puppet government instead of that democratically elected awards.

“The diplomatic efforts to reach a just and lasting peace call directly into question Europe and Italy intends to continue to do its part to arrive at shared solutions that protect the sovereignty of Kiev, which ensure the solidity of the Euro-Atlantic alliance because a divided West and a split Europe would be the only real gift that we could make in Moscow,” Meloni continued.

“We have also been confronted by President Zelensky on the accession process of Ukraine to the European Union, which Italy hopes for the same as other European nations that have long started this path,” Meloni continued.

“Italy will continue to promote economic pressure on the Russian Federation in G7 and within the European Union, which continues not to show concrete signs in the negotiating path, insists on attacks against civilians, perseveres in hitting the infrastructures needed for the population. The 20th package of sanctions that Europe is preparing to adopt represents an important step in reducing the revenue that feeds the Russian war machine. In the same way – he added – we will continue to work also to ensure the provision of financial support that has been decided by the European Council, a fundamental tool to ensure the survival of Ukraine because a possible financial crisis would produce incalculable damage also for the entire European stability”.

“The war has changed and now, without a truly solid and secure defense from all kinds of drones, no one can feel safe. Ukraine has developed a special format of security agreement, we call it ‘Drone deal’: it is important that Italy should be interested in this format of cooperation”. Thus the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, during the joint declarations at the end of the bilateral at Palazzo Chigi with the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, underlining then that “we agreed that our teams will work on the details of the ‘Drone deal’ program between Italy and Ukraine. ZELENSKY A MATTARELLA “PER NOI E’ FONDAMENTALE UNA PACE GIUSTA”

“We are truly grateful to Italy for your support and also for its personal firmness, Mr. President, in condemning Russian aggression, in supporting our sovereignty and, of course, in supporting our people and the idea that war should end with a just peace for us.” The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this, meeting at the Quirinale the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. “It’s not enough for the war to end. For us the question of justice is one of the fundamental priorities – Zelensky pointed out addressing Mattarella -. We are grateful to Italy for humanitarian aid and also for support during this winter. Winter was very hard, Mr. President. We fought, people resisted, we went ahead and strengthened our nation and our state. We are grateful not to be alone on this path and to develop relations between our countries. Today there was an important conversation with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who always supports us. We are talking about security not only of Ukraine, but also of the security of Italy and Europe, and we will continue to develop these relations.”.
