In this civil shrine, as in other places of pain, there are the roots of the Republic. On the morning of 12 August 1944, the SS departments, with the complicity of the fascists, began the massacre. A symbol of the abyss in which wars can precipitate, erasing the dignity of man, making the horror of annihilation prevail.” The President of the Republic says so, Sergio Mattarella. “The community of Stazzema, after the pain, was able to regain confidence, with Italy and Europe that redeemed with peace, freedom, democracy, with equal and universal rights, with the progressive integration, how much more terrible history had produced. Now – Mattarella continues – the wars have returned to cast their shadow on our days, now the will of power and the intentions of domination rekindle, manifesting itself in new forms.”.
“There are more than ever valuable testimonies and consciences capable of transmitting experiences and values. They are able to reject violence, hatred, contempt for respect for pluralism, the identity of people. Remembrance, as well as an act of responsibility, is an act of liberation that is renewed,” the Head of State underlines. “The victory over Nazism opened the path of rebirth. Each generation must know that each one belongs to the strengthening and defense of civil conquests, which are not acquired once and for all. Their ethical assumptions, the reasons for commitment, must be renewed and strengthened,” he concludes.
