Lefebvriani, the Vatican excommunication officializes schism

The Vatican has officially decreed the excommunication “lae sentintiae” towards the bishops of the Priestly Fraternity San Pio X (FSSPX), led by Monsignor Bernard Fellay, and four other neo-consecrated, marking a crucial moment in the relationship between the Catholic Church and this movement of the Lefebvriani. The decision, signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, underlines that the episcopal consecrations carried out without papal mandate and against the will of the Pope have constituted an act “of a schismatic nature”, automatically leading to the excommunication for the protagonists involved.

According to the document, the consecrations carried out by Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay, respectively the main consecrating and co-consecrant, together with the newly consecrated Pascal Schreiber, Michael Goldade, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry and Marc Hanappier, were judged as a “act of schismatic nature”, which has involved their uncommon “ipso facto”. The Church thus reiterates its rigour in maintaining unity and obedience to the Pope, considering the indispensable elements of ecclesial communion.

The Vatican also warned the faithful: “Nozze and confessions are invalid” if administered by the Lefebvrian priests, underlining that the sacraments officiated by these ministers are considered unlawful and invalid by Catholic doctrine. The Church, however, is open to the return of those who wish to resume full communion: “the Church, as a caring mother, will welcome with sincere affection all those who wish to return”.

The decree recalls that, since the times of Pope Paul VI, there have been many attempts to dialogue and reconciliation with the Lefebvrian movement, all ended in a negative way. The recent unmanned consecration represented a point of no return, making the official schism declaration necessary. “This act has configured the crime of schism, with the canonical consequences for the sacred ministers and the faithful involved,” reads in the document.

The decision of the Vatican is inserted in a complex context, marked by years of tension between the official Church and the Lefebvrian movement. Despite attempts at dialogue and reconciliation, the consecrations of episcopates without papal mandate have aggravated the situation, leading to the definitive breakup. The Church, however, renews her commitment to maintain an open attitude towards those who wish to return to full communion, underlining that the present gap derives from deliberate choices and not from occasional misunderstandings.

The excommunication of Lefebvriani represents a turning point in the relationship between the Vatican and the movement founded by Monsignor Marcel Lefebvre, a symbol of a schism that has lasted for decades. The Catholic Church confirms itself firmly in her desire for unity and obedience, while maintaining a welcoming attitude towards the faithful willing to return on the right path. It remains to be seen what future developments will bring this decision, and if definitive reconciliation is possible or if the schism will continue to divide the Catholic world.
