Istat, in March, industrial production is growing, driven by instrumental goods

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In March, industrial production grows for the second time on a monthly basis, driven by the positive dynamics of instrumental goods; on the contrary, consumer goods have been showing four-month conjunctural calis. Istat writes in his report. Overall in the first quarter, despite the recovery of February and March, a slight decline in the general index compared to the previous quarter.

In March, in tendential terms, the correct index for the calendar effects is growing, with a slight acceleration compared to the previous month; also in this case the increase of the total index is mainly determined by the instrumental goods. In March 2026 it is estimated that the seasonal index of industrial production increases by 0.7% compared to February. On the average of the first quarter the level of production decreases by 0.2% compared to the previous three months.

The seasonally adjusted index increases on a monthly basis for instrumental goods (+2.1%) and intermediate goods (+0.3%); while bending for consumer goods (-0.4%) and energy (-1.2%). Net of the calendar effects, in March 2026 the general index increased by 1.5% (the calendar working days were 22 against 21 March 2025). The instrumental goods increase markedly (+5.8%) and with lower intensity the intermediate goods (+0.5%); negative changes are observed instead, for consumer goods (-1.9%) and energy (-3.1%).

The sectors of economic activity that record the higher tendential increments are the manufacture of means of transport (+11.2%), the extractive activity (+6.7%) and the manufacture of computers, electronic and optical products (+6.1%). Larger flexions are found in the manufacture of chemicals (-7.8%), in the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air (-4.0%) and in other manufacturing industries, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (-2.4%).
