Increases inflation in May: +0.4% on a monthly basis and +3.2% on an annual basis

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In May 2026, inflation “records a change of +0.4% on a monthly basis and +3.2% on an annual basis (from +2.7% of April), confirming the preliminary estimate”. It makes Istat known.

The acceleration of inflation is mainly due to the dynamics of non-regulated energy prices (from +9.6% to +12,5%), regulated energy (from +5.3% to +5.6%), transport services (from +0.6% to +1.7%) and recreational, cultural and personal care services (from +2.6% to +3.0%).

In May the “bottom inflation”, net of fresh energy and food, accentuates its growth rate (from +1.6% to +1.7%), as well as that net of only energy goods (from +1.9% to +2.1%). The prices of goods and services record an acceleration on an annual basis, respectively from +3.1% to +3.4% and from +2.4% to +2.8%. As a result, the differential between the service sector and that of goods is at -0.6 percentage points, compared to -0.7 percentage points of the previous month.

The rate of tendential variation of the prices of the food goods, for the care of the house and the person drops to +1.9% (from +2.3% registered to April), while that of the products with high frequency of purchase salt slightly (from +4.2% to +4.4%).

The change in the general index reflects above all the increase in the prices of recreational, cultural and personal care services (+1.4%), non-regulated energy (+0.4%), unworked food and regulated energy (+0.3% for both); lower the prices of transport related services (-0.6%). The inflation rate acquired in May is +2.6% for the general index and +1.5% for the underlying component. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (IPCA) shows a change of +0.3

% on a monthly basis and +3.2% on an annual basis (from +2.8% of the previous month); the preliminary estimate was +3.3%. The national consumer price index for households of workers and employees (FOI), net of tobaccos, recorded a change of conjunctural +0.3% and a trend of +3.0%
