Gulf crisis, Tajani brings together Italian ambassadors in the Middle East in videoconference

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, met the Italian Ambassadors accredited in the Middle East in a video conference to the Farnesina in light of the military operations that in recent days involved the region. During the meeting an update was made on the security framework in the different countries of the area, with particular attention to the situation of compatriots and consular assistance activities.

Minister Tajani asked the Embassies and Consulates, in agreement with the Farnesina Crisis Unit, to maintain the highest level of attention and to continue to constantly monitor the evolution of the situation, ensuring full assistance to Italian citizens present in the region. Tajani expressed a strong concern about the actuation of tensions in the Middle East, reaffirming the need to work to avoid further escalation and to encourage an immediate return to dialogue.

During the meeting, the growing instability recorded in several theatres in the region was examined, characterized by the protracts of missile attacks and drones, by episodes of violence along the Israeli-Lebanese border, by attacks that in recent days affected some partner countries of the Gulf and the risk of a recrudescence of terrorist activities. It also drew attention to the possible effects of such developments on regional security and the main international maritime routes.

The minister was also updated on the situation of the two Italian citizens held in Benghazi, East Libya; Tajani has asked to strengthen the pressure on Eastern administration to reach the liberation of the two activists of Flotilla and their colleagues.
