ROMA (ITALPRESS) – For the first time, all the components of the distribution and sales chain of the press – publishers, distribution companies, local and national, and newsstands – join in a request to the government to address in an organic and structural way the serious crisis of the sector demanding the urgent opening of a permanent crisis table.
“The difficulties are no longer due to a temporary emergency, but to a structural crisis involving the whole sector, from publishing to distribution to the point of sale – explains Fieg in a note –. The increase in industrial and logistic costs, the decline in sales and the gradual closure of newsstands are compromising the economic sustainability of the enterprises and the estate of the distribution network, with direct relapses on pluralism and access to information by citizens. The unity of the supply chain was fundamental: it had never happened before subjects with different roles converged on a common request, recognizing that no one can face the system crisis alone. The objective is not only the strengthening of existing measures, but to start an institutional comparison aimed at defining an organic plan of interventions, able to promote the modernization and efficiency of the network and guarantee its economic sustainability and capillarity”.
“The request to the Government is therefore to quickly open a shared path to assess together the proposals of the supply chain for concrete and lasting solutions – Fieg emphasizes. The unit of publishers, distributors and newsstands is a significant step: the safeguarding of the press and its network of dissemination to citizens is a common responsibility and an essential condition for protecting pluralism of information and the daily service guaranteed throughout the national territory”.
