Ebola, Italy present at meetings with WHO and EU Health Safety Committee

OMA (ITALPRESS) – The Ministry of Health informs that today Italy, through the Department of Prevention, Research and Health Emergency, participated in the meetings organized by the WHO and the EU Health Security Committee on the Bundibugyo-BVD Virus Disease epidemic (Orthoebolavirus bundibugyoense) in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

During the meetings, in which it was present, for the Ministry, the Head of the Department, Maria Rosaria Campitiello, the international authorities made the point on the emergency of public health of international importance (PHEIC) declared on 17 May last. The risk is assessed by the WHO as a high national and regional level (in the area concerned), but low globally: it is not pandemic emergency.

The WHO response focuses on surveillance, tracking and monitoring of contacts, isolation of suspected and confirmed cases, strengthening of infection prevention and control, protection of health workers, safe burials and maintenance of essential services. General travel restrictions are not considered the most recommended measure. The focus remains on contact tracing, case isolation, contact monitoring and exit point screening. Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have already activated measures.

Italy is monitoring the evolution of the picture and has already issued a circular, yesterday, for the health surveillance to the personnel, health and not, employed in activities of cooperation/health support or logistics to government, non-governmental organizations, and co-operators, that provide services of health, welfare and logistics in the areas of the country affected by the outbreaker.
