ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Still falling: in 2025 were 355.772, down 3.8% on 2024 (-14 thousand units). It makes Istat known by referring the data of birth and fertility for 2025. According to the first provisional data, in the period January-July 2026, the births are 196.864, decreased by 1.1% compared to the same period of 2025 (-2 thousand). The average number of children per woman reaches a new minimum: in 2025 it is 1,14 (from 1,18 in 2024). The provisional estimate for the period January-July 2026 shows a fertility of 1,13. The fecundity of women graduates is lower (1,09 children per woman) and late (average age at the birth of 34,9 years) than that of women holding a medium license (1,58 children and 29,7 years). Also in 2025 Sofia and Leonardo are the favourite names of parents for children. In 2025, 7.3% of the parents received the double surname of both the father and the mother. It was 6.7% in 2024.
