NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – The Italian Institute of Culture in New York is pleased to announce that on October 14th at 6 pm the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, Giorgio Mulè, will be present at Park Avenue to inaugurate two exceptional events. The first is the exhibition entitled “1946: the Republic was born. The Constituent Assembly in Montecitorio”, which celebrates the 80th anniversary of the institutional referendum for the choice between Monarchy and the Republic and the election of the Constituent Assembly; the second concerns the exhibition, for the first time in the United States, of the painting Maddalena in ecstasy (c. 1606-1610) by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
The two exhibitions tell Italy through two moments of break and rebirth: the Republican choice and the path that led to the new Constitution, and the genius that revolutionized modern painting. Built on the model of the great exhibition organized in Rome by the Chamber of Deputies at Palazzo Montecitorio, the itinerary proposed by the Institute of Culture of New York consists of reproductions of documents from the Historical Archives of the Chamber, vintage photographs and multimedia materials, and traces the main passages that led from the end of the Second World War, to the vote of 2 June 1946 and the subsequent approval of the Constitution of the Republic, on 22 December 1947. Recognized in 2014 by Mina Gregori as Caravaggio’s original autograph, La Maddalena in ecstasy is a work of the last phase of the painter.
The saint, with his head poured and his fingers interwoven, emerges from darkness in an image of pain and repentance. The canvas was identified as one of the paintings that Caravaggio carried with him on his last trip, in July 1610. After centuries in private collections and recent international exhibitions, it first arrives in the United States.
