ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In February the number of international travelers who have stayed in Italy grew by 11.1 percent compared to the same month of 2025, while nights increased by 6.4%. The increase is even more marked for expenditure, increased by 15.2% to 2.9 billion. This is what emerges from the data of an analysis of the Bank of Italy, according to which to this dynamic the approximately 250 thousand travelers, all overnight, “Olympics”, who made expenses for 394 million; this amount is 13.8% of the expenditure carried out by overnight travelers and is greater than the total increase of tourist revenue than February 2025 (376 million). “Olympic” travelers have more than double spending indicators than other overnight travelers: average per capita spending is 1.583 euro, the daily 308 euro. The average duration of the stay is slightly lower: 5,1 nights, compared to the 5,7 nights of other travellers.
More than 50% of “Olympic” travelers come from only five countries (Germany, United States, Switzerland, the Netherlands and France). Lombardy has absorbed the vastly prevalent share of the Olympic flows, with 71.4% of travellers, almost two-thirds of nights and an expenditure of 61.6% of the total. The second region is Veneto in terms of spending and number of nights, Trentino-Alto Adige for number of travellers. The analysis of Bakitalia was also extended to the Jubilee travelers. From the data it emerges as in 2025 almost 1.4 million travelers, all overnight, have visited Italy with the aim of participating in the Jubilee, 2.2% of the total overnight travelers (over 61 million).
Approximately 2.2 million other travellers who participated in jubilee initiatives would have come to Italy even in the absence of the Jubilee. The whole of these travelers and the “travelers of the Jubilee” represents 5.8% of the total overnight travelers who visited Italy in 2025.
This aggregate includes an expenditure of 4.0 billion, equal to 7.4% of total expenditure and a predominant component in determining the increase in total tourist expenditure recorded compared to 2024. There is a positive relationship between the number of “travelers of the Jubilee” and the dimension typical of tourist flows by country of origin, confirmed also by the positive relationship with the number of Catholics present in these countries; a weaker relationship is found with the share of Catholics on the total population.
Looking at the first five countries by number of “travelers of the Jubilee”, are four who also appear in the first five positions by total number of overnight travelers. United States and Spain express the largest share (respectively, 17,1 and 11.0%), followed by Poland with 8.1%. In 2025, in Lazio there was an increase of 23% of overnight travellers and 19.2% of spending (for other regions, respectively, 6.2 and 2.1%).
This trend was largely determined by the “travelers of the Jubilee” and those who participated in the related initiatives, although not having the Jubilee as the main reason for the journey to Italy.
