ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “I wish first of all to wish to all athletes of the twenty-six nations of three continents who are ready to compete and who are prepared, in view of this prestigious competition, with commitment, determination and spirit of sacrifice”. Thus the president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, in a message that will be published tomorrow by the Daily of Puglia, on the occasion of the opening from the XX edition of the Mediterranean Games, in Taranto.
“I thank all those who have committed themselves, in different roles, to organize this important event of international sport – continues the head of the state -. The motto chosen for these games – “Embrace the future” – expresses hope. Hope in a future that you would want peace, development, tolerance. The Mediterranean is now crossed by conflicts, violence, migratory crisis. The commitment must be aimed at bringing it back to being a source of civilization, a place of dialogue and confrontation, an area of international cooperation and solidarity among peoples. The Mediterranean Games can become, as Pope Leo XIV recently inaugurated, “peace and brotherhood prophecy”. A particularly intense thought of attention and closeness I intend to dedicate to the inhabitants of the historic city of Taranto – the guardian of a historical, cultural, artistic heritage of invaluable value – that in recent times have had to face dramatic aspects of employment and health, economic development and quality of life: these aspects of their condition constitute a problem and, together, a national commitment”.
“The choice of Taranto as the seat of an international event such as that of the Mediterranean Games manifests the role that the City plays in the Republic. The wish is that, starting from these games, Taranto returns to “abbrace the future”, concludes Mattarella.
