Delrio “Closing borders is a blow to the heart of Europe”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The EU Commissioner for Immigration Brunner, a Conservative, said that the suspension of the Schengen Agreement can only be taken into consideration as a final measure and only when it is necessary and proportionate. Suspending Schengen is not making a decree, it strikes the heart of Europe, for this I am worried.” It is the thought of former Minister Graziano Delrio in an interview with La Repubblica. “Meloni was wrong? Yes, the crisis of Ceuta had to become the occasion for a qualitative leap of European policy, not to feed new divisions between states. It had to strengthen unity, the ability to build together a common policy. It is very sad that two historically allied countries and friends are in this situation.
Ceuta is not a Schengen area, although it is formally Spain. So there was and there is no danger that from the exclave comes out and travel freely in the European territory. The comparison with Slovenia is totally improper».
On the Minister for Culture: “I asked the minister to come to committee as soon as possible to explain this choice. Spain has received the praise of all European countries for how it managed the emergency in Ceuta”.
On the possible responsibilities of Morocco Delrio says: “Seventy thousand people don’t gather by chance and can’t do it secretly by such an authority attentive to the public order. It is clear that what happened refers to a geopolitical game, with a short direction”.
On the fight against illegal immigration: “No one has to enter Europe thanks to a criminal and no one who enters Europe must be treated as a criminal, but as a person. I tell you an episode: when Merkel, in 2015, announced that Germany would welcome a million Syrians, I was there as a minister and told my German colleague: but are you sure? Then they did it, but we must take seriously the fear of people”.
