ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Council of Ministers, on a proposal from the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, has deliberated the declaration of premineous national strategic interest of two major investment programmes for the realization of data centers on the Italian territory, pursuant to Article 13 of the “Decreto Asset”. The two interventions, located respectively in the metropolitan area of Milan and in the area of Sulcis Iglesiente, mobilize altogether about 6.8 billion direct investments and strengthen the government’s strategy to consolidate the digital sovereignty of the country, support the development of artificial intelligence and attract investments with high technological content. The first program, of the company K2 Strategic Infrastructure Italy, held by K2 Strategic, involves the development of a hyperscale campus for data centers of total capacity up to about 400 MW in the municipalities of Zibido San Giacomo and Lacchiarella, in the metropolitan area of Milan.
The program provides an overall investment estimated at around 5.3 billion and will generate, during the development and construction phases – lasting four years – an estimated average employment requirement of about 2,000 annual working units. In the next operational phase, the project will guarantee approximately 200 direct jobs with high specialization, to which will be added about 1,300 units in the permanent induced dedicated to management and maintenance activities. In this regard, Minister Urso had a telephone confrontation with the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, in order to verify the full compliance of the investments regarding the provisions provided for by the new regional law on the data center, within the framework of a full and loyal collaboration between the institutions. The second program, called “Digital Vault Sulcis” and promoted by Energy Vault Sulcis, indirectly controlled by Energy Vault Holdings, provides a strategic project for the realization, at the former coal mine of Monte Sinni in Nuraxi Figus (Gonnesa, South Sardinia), of a Data Center Edge AI integrated with infrastructures for the production and accumulation of renewable energy.
The mobility initiative has an investment of approximately 1,49 billion and includes a Data Center with capacity up to 30 MW, generating an estimate of about 400 annual jobs between direct and induced employment. The project will promote the sustainable conversion of a disused industrial site, contributing to the creation in Sulcis of an advanced technology hub dedicated to artificial intelligence and new energy infrastructure. An address consistent with the strategy that the Government is carrying out for the territory, based on industrial relaunch and the requalification of the productive pole. Following the deliberation of the Council of Ministers will be appointed, for each investment programme, an extraordinary commissioner of Government, in agreement with the Regions, with the task of ensuring the coordination of administrative activities and speeding up the implementation of the operations, also for the purpose of the release of the single authorization.
