Planned “Sbarks in Italy collapsed by 82%, Spain exploits data”. Today the extraordinary meeting of Interior Ministers

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “Temporary restoration of controls at internal borders is a measure that European countries have acted hundreds of times over the years: Spain itself has resorted to it on several occasions, as well as some neighbouring countries have done to us. The clamor that has arisen around the decision of our government is therefore totally unmotivated.” Thus the Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, in an interview with La Verità. Piantedosi adds that “as to the numbers on landings, mentioned in these days in an instrumental way, also by the same Spanish government, it would be enough a more careful analysis but above all objective: in the last fifteen years in Italy there have been two significant and not random calis. The first when he was Minister Salvini, in 2018, the second today, thanks to the policies put in place by this government”.

“If we compare the landings of the first seven months of 2023 – Piantedosi continues – the beginning of our legislation, with the same period of this year the numbers fall by 82%”. “It is however expressed full solidarity with Spain – says the minister -, who is facing a complex situation. Italy has already said that it is ready to offer its support. But one cannot look at these detachments, because every person who lands irregularly enters into the European space, and therefore the question concerns all Member States.”.

“I hope that we make clear about the dynamics of what happened, even to understand if there was an organized direction behind the mass influx.” “What is certain is that a more permissive attitude on the front of migration ends up fuelling the illusion, in those who have no right to remain in Europe,” says Piantedosi

TAJANI “AVEVAMO IL DOVERE DI AGIRE”

“I understand Spanish nervousness for their bankruptcy policy on migrants, but we have a duty to protect the Italian borders which are among other things even 7 thousand kilometers of European borders, which also concern other states, and which are therefore borders of the whole Union.” The Foreign Minister and Vice-Premier Antonio Tajani says this in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

Tajani adds that “what happened to Ceuta is not something marginal, it is a risk for the whole Union, and it is our right to ask for additional measures, clarifications and preventive measures because these facts do not repeat.”.

On the numbers quoted by the Spanish government regarding irregular migrants arriving in Italy, Tajani explains that these are numbers “dated, prior to 2021, the real are others, from us there was a halving of irregular arrivals, also thanks to a foreign policy that on the migration dossier under the Meloni government was more than responsible, beginning with the effects of a Mattei Plan which is systemic and which is giving its fruits”.

The extraordinary meeting of the Ministers of the Interior of the EU will be held today, which will be dedicated to the implications for internal security, the Schengen area and EU migration policy and to the examination of possible European measures to support Member States of first entry in the event of new migration emergencies.
