Immigration, Meloni at the EU leaders meeting: “Accelerating on repatriation norms”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – On the edge of the European Council, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, together with the Danish Prime Ministers, Mette Frederiksen, and Dutch, Rob Jetten, hosted a new informal meeting among some of the Member States most interested in the issue of innovative solutions to be applied to the management of the migration phenomenon. It makes it known Palazzo Chigi.

Together with Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands and the European Commission, they took part in the meeting Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Poland, Malta, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Sweden and Hungary.

“President Ursula von der Leyen explained the Commission’s main work in the field of migration, focusing in particular on the possible migration consequences arising from the evolution of the crisis in the Middle East and on the initiatives necessary to ensure an effective and timely European response,” reads in a note.

During the meeting, “it has been expressed appreciation for the results achieved in recent months, including the establishment of the European list of safe countries of origin, the introduction of the new concept of safe third country, the adoption of the Chisinau Declaration on Migration, the political agreement on the new Rimpatri Regulation and, more recently, the inclusion of a reference to the financial support of the Union for innovative solutions in migration in the context of the previous negotiations”.

President Meloni stressed “the need to move quickly from the definition of new rules to their concrete implementation, starting with the Rimpatri Regulation”. Recalling the joint letter sent today along with Prime Minister Frederiksen and 17 other EU Heads of State and Government, the President of the Council highlighted “the importance of quickly starting concrete and replicable pilot projects”. In this regard, “the discussion among leaders has made the interest to assess even hypotheses of joint repatriation centers in third countries,” the note concludes.
