ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The juvenile work, still present, represents a serious violation of the rights of childhood and adolescence. Powered by poverty, inequalities, conflicts and humanitarian crises, it deprives millions of children, children and adolescents of the possibility to study, grow and build their own future and humanity to be able to avail themselves of their energies and intelligence.” The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella says so.
“The progress made over the last twenty-five years shows that change is possible: the number of children involved in child labour has decreased from 246 to 138 million. However, the objective of Agenda 2030 which envisaged the elimination of the phenomenon by 2025 was not achieved. More than 54 million children continue to carry out dangerous activities that jeopardize their health, their safety and their development – continues the head of the state -. The problem affects all continents and takes on different forms, often difficult to identify and contrast. Also in Italy, child labour finds fertile ground in submerged work, in exploitation through digital platforms, in school dispersion and in situations of greater economic and social vulnerability. Particularly dramatic is the condition of minor victims of trafficking, forced to work, accompaniment, sexual exploitation and other forms of abuse that deny fundamental rights, also recognized by international conventions and national legislation.”.
“In front of this reality, school is the most effective tool for prevention, recovery, inclusion. This must be accompanied by effective protection systems, support for families. Every child and every child taken away from the road and exploitation, returned to the school, represents a victory for society,” concludes Mattarella.
