Meloni “We asked for flexibility to the EU, we cannot tell citizens that money is only there for defense”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The measures of the government to prevent the effects of the crisis will always be punctual. The government will do everything that can and must to combat the effects of international crises.” So premier Giorgia Meloni at Mattino Cinque, on Canale 5. “There are so many measures we have taken from the beginning of the legislature to lower energy costs, especially for vulnerable families. The question of energy costs in Italy is structural. Many decades ago this country decided to abandon nuclear power, and we paid it. This government has had the courage to reopen this chapter and to reopen the production of nuclear energy in Italy, which is a fast, safe, clean and effective way to lower costs,” he adds.

“In the face of a global crisis we cannot think that individual governments can respond with ordinary instruments. That is why we have asked the European Commission to extend the flexibility already granted for security and defence to the instruments to reduce the impact of the international crisis on families and businesses – he continues – we cannot tell citizens that money is only there for defence. I strongly support that we must take care of the defence, I want Italy to be a nation that must not say thanks to anyone, but if we do not give answers to the crisis we risk that there is nothing left to defend. That’s why we need balance.”.

On the suspension of the Stability Pact for energy expenditure “there is an ongoing interlocution” with the EU Commission, “we work because we find an agreement as soon as possible and we can return to normal. We are very committed especially at diplomatic level on this goal.”.

“The risk of Islamic integralism is a real danger and some of us have been denouncing it for many years, it is one of the reasons for our fight against illegal mass immigration and the strengthening of security in the territory. It is essential to keep the attention high on the phenomenon, we do not intend to lower the guard,” he says. “On mass illegal immigration we reversed the trend dramatically, the numbers say it. The landings compared to 2023 have decreased even by 80%. And the repatriations increased: in 2022 every 100 illegal immigrants who landed in Italy were repatriated about 4. Today at least 35. I do not sing victory, we want to do even better, and we could do it even immediately if all the components of the state remained in the same direction – continues -. If citizens ask to stop illegal mass immigration and if they do laws that have this objective, then it is expected that those who must enforce that law do not work to make sure that the rule is questioned. This slows down our ability to give answers.”.
