Valditara “Behind violence a lack of values”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “At the origin of these violence there are no economic difficulties. There is an alarming lack of values.” On the day when new violence is risked by the Movement 17 October, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, Giuseppe Valditara, Minister of Education and Merit, reflects on the phenomenon. “If we go to look at what they exchange in the chats, what they did going to devastate shops of clothes and griffed objects, I see the expression of a strong moral and cultural degradation – observes -. Who in the family has acquired solid values does not break, does not steal. This happens if the family has managed to transmit positive values. If parents are absent, they are not interested in the son or perhaps they do not know our language and culture, the negative results are seen”. But they are not all foreigners “however the majority is and belong to a certain cultural area should make us reflect”. “There is also a theme of legality – the minister emphasizes –. Everyone has to understand that you can’t behave outside the rules. It is not acceptable to hear ‘so we in Italy do what we want because nothing happens to us…’. It must also be repressed the minor illegality which then leads to certain behaviors.”.

“Remember the mayor of New York Rudolph Giuliani? In that city there was a very high rate of microcriminality – he explains. He departed from the ‘theory of broken windows: a broken window leads to ten broken windows, if you skip the turnstiles of the subway, soon all will jump them. He applied zero tolerance and those behaviors collapsed. And then there is a need for active citizenship: if you go on a bus and put your feet in the seat, people have to say ‘put them down’. If you bother a woman, there must be someone who tells you to stop. And certainly there is also school.” What do you have to do? “Educating respect, correct relationships, empathy, and contrasting all forms of violence. These are the principles we have put for the first time in school programmes as mandatory objectives. And the school must also teach Western values born in Athens, Rome and Jerusalem. From respect for each person, freedom and responsibility, good faith. And there is a problem of language.” About students who know little Italian, “students but also parents. There is an Ocse study that documents it well: if parents do not know the language and therefore cannot know anything about the school life of the son, if they disinterest of what he does, there will be a lower school insertion by the young, a higher rate of abandonment. And then you find the maranza.”.

And the violent people who meet on social media: “A huge problem. In all the recent episodes of stabbing a teacher, the assailant was on live social or filming violence and then relaunching it on the web. That is why parents must be the first sentinels. But let me say something else.” “I also want to remember – Valditara emphasizes – that for decades we have become accustomed to those who deresponsibility: the fault of society, the bourgeoisie, capitalism, the government… But guilt is individual. On the left there are those who declare that the government has taken away the money to the school to spend them in weapons: they say a double lie. On the one hand, we know that the defence resources have been specifically authorized by the EU by way of derogation from the Stability Pact. On the other hand, the school never invested like today. From the Monti government to the Draghi government, 6 billion were spent in 11 years. The Meloni government invested more than 5 in four years.” “There are those who complained that Italian boys did not do as in France, there was even those who condemned the violence with the ‘mà or ‘comprehensive’ them or did not condemn them. But the bad teachers are above all those who still continue to delegittimare authority, to diminish the principle of individual responsibility, to speak only of rights and never of duties. Instead, we want to share from a society based on respect, on positive values, on dialogue, on building rather than on destroying,” Valditara concludes.
